Getting a Read from Betting Patterns

To win at poker, you have to gain insight into how your opponents play so you can predict to some extent when they will call, bet, raise or fold. By observing how an opponent bets, you can sometimes pick up patterns that makes a player more predictable to you.

Make it a point to study and follow the action, especially if it goes to a showdown, whenever anyone opens the betting. How did the bettor bet the hand? If it goes to showdown, then be sure to note how big was the bet in relation to the strength of the hand. In poker online, it is relatively common for players to bet similar amounts for similarly strong hands, for instance, 3x the big blind with pocket faces, or 2x the big blind with suited Aces. If you see this type of pattern emerge, then you can more accurately put your opponent on specific hand ranges.

Notice if any one player habitually raises on the button and then observe the hand if it goes to showdown. Is this poker online player a bluffer on the button or scaling bets according to hand strength?

A player who tends to vary their bets according to hand strength and position is giving away information about the cards they play. Look for these patterns to sharpen your edge against them.
