Unite has slammed Hewlett Packard’s latest announcement that they are cutting the jobs of 934 employees out of the 16,500 people currently employed by them in the UK. Union Unite is also enraged that the firm has decided to keep contractors and temporary staff workers, calling it an insult.

A spokesperson for the company said that Hewlett Packard has been discussing its proposed workforce changes with the right authorities, which had been first put forth to the Hewlett Packard European Works Council in November 2009. The discussions are still in progress.

The spokesperson announced that the changes being made by Hewlett Packard are in keeping with the company’s business review and aim to help the company develop in the world market by producing world class products for its consumers.

However, Unite does not agree with the firm’s changes and said that people can expect around 1.000 more job cuts in the coming year. The union has also expressed that this could cause the leftover workers at Hewlett Packard to experience stress-related illnesses because of the added pressure of lesser number of workers.

Unite national officer for IT and communications Peter Skyte said that the cutback is a continuation of the slashing of jobs by Hewlett Packard from the past two years where almost 4,000 jobs have already been slashed.

He also said that the firm’s step to cut jobs weakens the coalition government’s stand that the private sector will stimulate job growth after the economic recession and also shows that the jobs that had vanished in the manufacturing sector have now been either lost completely or have been off-shored.
