Bad Handwriting Still a Business Skill in 2009
It can sometimes appear as though hand writing is a dying art, it’s a skill that is even nowadays crucial in numerous areas of life. A handwritten letter carries more gravitas than a typewritten missive; e.g. an invitation, an apology, or an application for a job.
You might suppose it’s a recent fad of people eschewing handwriting for the keyboard, yet way back to the late 1800s, there were cries that handwriting was forgotten because of the typewriter. Now in the 21st century, the fault is being attached to the utilisation of computers.
All the same, there still exists a healthy requirement for handwriting skills in academia and the business world. Hand written missives are thought of as far more authentic, they demonstrate the writer has deliberated over her words, while demonstrating more respect to the recipient. In this modern age of canned responses, the hand-written missive has never been more mighty.
I have a confession to make here. I’ve often been caught out with my awful penmanship – made worse by years of reliance on the keyboard. In situations in which I’ve had to hand write something, my writing’s been a sloping scrawl. How to solve such a problem? I handwrote as often as I could, and my writing greatly improved. So it’s wise to brush up on your penmanship through sheer repitition.
One more tip is to find a pen you are comfy with, with refills. Great pens that utilize refills include the legendary mont blanc fountain pen. This allows you to brush up your hand-writing with the same pen.
